Hyeon listens to his mother about his family history from his grandfather to father to him now in a cave in the Mount Owl. Though Hyeon admires his father's honorable death in opposition to Japan, he has made his cowardice justified ingeniously because he couldn't cope with his grandfather's influence. Having witnessed the cruel communists' massacre through the Korean War, Hyeon realizes what to do now. He swears to fight with the communists to the last moment.
