To Take Place at PISAF Next Month

The Korean Film Council (KOFIC) and the Korean Academy of Film Arts (KAFA) will co-present five master classes of internationally acclaimed animation professionals with the Pucheon International Student Animation Festival (PISAF) in Bucheon’s City Hall and the Korea Manhwa Contents Agency.

These animation master classes, which will take place from November 8th to 11th during the 15th PISAF, are the 8th edition of the KAFA + Master Class series. Starting with the Master Class of KIM Woo-hyung, the cinematographer of films such as A Good Lawyer’s Wife (2003) and Late Autumn (2010) last March, KOFIC and KAFA have subsequently introduced key Korean film professionals throughout its series: film director JUNG Ji-woo of Happy End (1999) and Eungyo (2012) in April; martial arts choreographer and action director JUNG Doo-hong in May; deputy festival director of the Cannes International Film Festival Christian Jeune in June; Oldboy director PARK Chan-wook and actor CHOI Min-shik in July and August, respectively; and VFX Supervisor and CEO of Mofac Studio JANG Sung-ho in September.

The 8th edition of the KAFA + Master Class series will start with the Korean-Belgian director Jung Henin’s talk on the making of his animated feature Approved for Adoption, which is a film adaptation of Jung’s comic based on his own life and is the opening film of this year’s PISAF.
Japanese animation director and mechanical designer KAWAMORI Shoji, who created the concepts that served as the basis for such notable anime series as The Super Dimension Fortress Macross and The Vision of Escaflowne, will speak on ‘Mechanical Designs for Animation.’ Also from Japan, the co-founders of animation studio Gainax, TAKEDA Yasuhiro, AKAI Takami, SADAMOTO Yoshiyuki and YAMAGA Hiroyuki, who is also well known as the director of Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honnêamise, will have a master class on ‘30 Years of Gainax.’

Chris Landreth, a 2005 Oscar winner for Best Animated Short Film for his film Ryan, will host a talk on 2D and 3D technology for animation, while Korean animation directors from KAFA will talk about the process of making animated features in ‘Korean Feature: Work in Progress.’
The 15th Pucheon International Student Animation Festival will be held from November 7th to 11th.
