Director Jung Hyung-suk, who won the Grand Prize in the Korean Competition section at the 19th Jeonju International Film Festival with Land of Seonghye, returns with his new film, Persona a strange girl. The film examines the way people define and categorize others. As a theater troupe prepares for a new production and recruits new members, a woman named Hyeri joins. She claims to have graduated from Seoul National University’s Computer Engineering program. People look at her with curiosity, but when they see her sharp and intelligent demeanor, they acknowledge her with remarks like, “Of course, she’s from SNU.” Haeyoung, the troupe’s director and leader, is also impressed by Hyeri’s passionate attitude. However, rumors start spreading that Hyeri may not actually be a Seoul National University graduate. As doubts arise, people’s attitudes toward her change drastically. But in Persona a strange girl, Hyeri’s true identity is not the central issue. In a conversation with the famous actress Eunjung, Hyeri says she became an actress because she wanted to "become someone else and live a different life." Later, Eunjung advises her, “What’s important is not losing your essence.” The film criticizes how people, including ourselves, often fixate on superficial qualities such as background and credentials, rather than what truly matters –Hyeri’s performance.
