MY PLACE, THE BASEMENT SATELLITE and TOUR OF DUTY to Screen

The Hotdocs Canadian International Documentary Film Festival has announced its 2014 lineup, which will include a trio of Korean non-fiction works. My Place and The Basement Satellite will both have their international premieres at the event, while Tour of Duty will vie in competition.

KIM Dong-ryeong and PARK Kyoung-tae’s military brothel expose Tour of Duty originally debuted at the Busan International Film Festival back in 2012 and slowly begun to make its mark at international events, following its Special Prize win at the Yamagata International Film Festival last October. Now the film will compete again in Hot Docs’ International Spectrum program.

PARK Moon-chil’s My Place, a personal account of the director’s sister as she struggles to live in Canada as a single mother, has been a hit with audiences in Korea, earning Audience Awards from both the Jeonju International Film Festival (where it debuted in competition) and the Seoul Independent Documentary Film & Video Festival. The film will screen in Hot Docs’ World Showcase.

Screening in the Next section will be KIM Hyoung-ju’s The Basement Satellite, which follows a young man’s attempts to build his own small satellite and send it into space. The film picked up an Audience Award and Special Mention at the DMZ Korean International Documentary Film Festival last year.

Hot Docs is the largest documentary festival in North America, with an annual attendance of over 160,000 spectators. This year’s edition will run from April 24th to May 4th.
