3 IM Classics Join 4 Current Korean Films in Lineup

As his 102nd film Revivre makes its way around the world, veteran director IM Kwon-taek is set to visit the Singapore International Film Festival in December, where he will receive a lifetime achievement award. Three of the cineaste’s films will screen at the event. Another quartet of current Korean features have been invited to screen in the nation state as well.

The award will be bestowed to IM on December 13th, a day before the festivals ends. In addition to Revivre, which bowed at Venice and screened at the Toronto and Busan International Film Festivals and stars AHN Sung-ki, the classic IM films Mandara (1981) and Village in the Mist (1982) will make up a special showcase of his work.

Seen by many as the godfather of the Korean film industry, IM made many films starting with 1962’s  Farewell to Dooman River. During the 1980s he became the first Korean filmmaker to regularly receive international film festival invitations and his local popularity peaked in the early 1990s, when he delivered the top grossing films of 1990 (General’s Son), 1991 (General’s Son II) and 1993 (Sopyonje).

Joining the filmmaker in Singapore will be four more Korean films. These include 18 - Eighteen Noir, the LG HiEntech Award winner for Best Korean Film at the Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival, PARK Jung-bum’s epic art film Alive and LEE Do-yun’s thriller Confession, both of which screened in Toronto, and KIM Ki-duk’s latest feature One on One, another Venice film which opened the Venice Days section.

The 25th Singapore International Film Festival will open with Ken KWEK’s local production Unlucky Plaza on December 4th.
