Mads Mikkelsen and Steven YEUN Greet Korean Fans

The first Seoul Comic Con took place from August 4th to 6th, welcoming around 40,000 fans over the weekend to the COEX Convention Center in Gangnam. Special guests included Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen, star of TV series Hannibal and Marvel movie Doctor Strange, as well as Korean-American actor Steven YEUN, of popular zombie series The Walking Dead and most recently BONG Joon-ho’s blockbuster Netflix production Okja.

Started in San Diego, California in 1970, Comic Con has grown into an international event that takes place in 22 countries. The event focuses on popular culture and ranges from comic books to TV series and films.

The Seoul event, which follows other Asian Comic Cons that have sprouted up in Beijing, China and Mumbai, India, kicked off with an opening ceremony that was attended by Mikkelson and YEUN, as well as C.B. Cebulski, the vice president of Marvel’s International Business Development & Brand Management team.

Among the highlights of Comic Cons are visitors that engage in cosplay, as they dress up as their favorite characters from film, TV and comic books. During the Korea Championships of Cosplay, a fan dressed as Iron Man took the main award, which came with a cash prize and an invitation to the Crown Championships of Cosplay, to take place in Chicago in 2018.

Other events included a live talk with JU Ho-min, whose popular webtoon With God is being adapted into the two-part, big-budget fantasy Along with the Gods. Seoul Comic Con will return next summer.
