PARASITE Tops Grand Bell and BaekSang Arts Awards

Awards Shows Held without Audiences Due to COVID-19


The 56th editions of both the Grand Bell Film Awards and the BaekSang Arts Awards were held in quick succession earlier this month, on the 3rd and 5th, both without an audience for the first time, owing to public health concerns during the COVID-19 Pandemic. BONG Joon-ho’s PARASITE (2019) won the Best Film prize at both, as well as BaekSang’s separate Grand Prize, and was also the most awarded film at each event, with five Grand Bells and a trio of BaekSang accolades.

LEE Byung-hun picked up the Best Actor Award at both gatherings but for different films, the Grand Bell for ASHFALL (2019) and the BaekSang Award for The Man Standing Next. JUNG Yu-mi earned best Actress at the Grand Bells for KIM JI-YOUNG, BORN 1982 (2019) while JEON Do-yeon was triumphant at BaekSang for Birthday (2019).

Director BONG picked up the awards for Best Director and Best Screenplay (along with co-writer HAN Jin-won) at the Grand Bells. PARASITE (2019) also picked up awards for Best Supporting Actress (LEE Jung-eun) and Best Music (JUNG Jae-il). Other multiple award winners were ASHFALL (2019), which also netted Andras IKLADI the Visual Effects prize, Extreme Job (2019), winner of Best Supporting Actor for JIN Seon-kyu and Best Planning for LEE Jong-seok, and SVAHA : THE SIXTH FINGER (2019), which won for Best Art Direction (SEO Seong-kyeong) and Best Lighting (JEON Young-seok).

Other prize winners at the Grand Bells included The Great Battle (2018) for Best Costume Design (LEE Jin-hee), The Battle: Roar to Victory (2019) for Best Cinematography (KIM Young-ho), EXIT (2019) for Best Editing (LEE Gang-hui), KIM Bora won Best New Director for House of Hummingbird (2019), JEON Yeo-been was crowned Best New Actress for After My Death (2018) and JUNG Hae-in earned Best New Actor for Tune in for Love (2019).

At the BaekSang Arts Awards, PARASITE (2019)’s third prize was for Best New Actor (PARK Myeong-hoon). Other multiple awards winners were House of Hummingbird (2019), which won Best Director (KIM Bora) and Best Supporting Actress (KIM Sae-byuk), and WOO Min-ho’s The Man Standing Next, which also won the Technical Award for KIM Seo-hee’s makeup and hair.

The Best New Director prize went to KIM Do-young for KIM JI-YOUNG, BORN 1982 (2019), LEE Sang-geun picked up Best Screenplay for his debut film EXIT (2019), the Best Supporting Actor Award went to LEE Kwang-soo (Inseparable Bros, 2019) and Best New Actress went to GANG Mal-geum for the indie Lucky Chan-sil.
