Moue House to Shake Up Streaming Market with Major Local Content

Disney+ will make its long-awaited debut in the Korea market on November 12, and earlier this month the global streamer staged a live event to outline their aspirations across Asia, unveiling the service’s rollout in the region as well as 20 different local programs, including seven series produced in Korea.

The upfront presentation included several projects already known to be Disney+ productions, such as Moving and Rookies, as well as several other programs that were originally slated to premiere on other networks, including Snowdrop, and a number of programs that were revealed for the first time.

Budgeted at KRW 50 billion (USD 42.55 million), Moving is a 20-part action series based on the enormously popular webtoon of the same name from Kang Full about teenagers discovering they have superpowers. The show features Zo Insung, Cha Taehyun, Ryoo Seungryong and Han Hyojoo and is directed by Park Injae (The Mayor, 2017).

Set in a police academy, the coming-of-age romance Rookies is notable for being the screen debut of popular singer Kang Daniel. SF-thriller Grid, from Stranger writer Lee Sooyeon, stars Seo Kangjoon and Kim Ajoong. Romantic melodrama Snowdrop, which was expected to debut on JTBC, features Jung Haein, fresh from Netflix’s D.P. and Jisoo of the girl group Blackpink.

Speaking of Blackpink, Disney will also launch the documentary Blackpink: The Movie, which will be made available both in theaters and on Disney+. The service will also host Outrun by Running Man, a spinoff of the massively successful variety series Running Man, and the romantic fantasy Kiss Sixth Sense, based on a webtoon of the same name.
