Tim Burton’s MISS PEREGRINE Opens in Second

Business saw a 25% uptick as we eased into October with 2.48 million tickets sold over the weekend. A strong new local release gave Korea the edge once again and put it back over the majority with 51% as new films flooded the chart.

Asura : The City of Madness, KIM Sung-soo’s first film since The Flu (2013) and his fourth film with actor JUNG Woo-sung, was a commanding draw, landing in first place with 1.07 million viewers (USD 8.35 million). Audiences came in for the big cast, which also features HWANG Jung-min, JU Ji-hoon, KWAK Do-won and JUNG Man-sik. Asura had a powerful opening on Wednesday and has already banked a very healthy 1.8 million admissions (USD 12.78 million) in five days.

Tim Burton’s new fantasy Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children had a respectable debut with 596,000 spectators (USD 4.47 million) over the weekend and 742,000 admissions (USD 5.36 million) since its Wednesday bow. With positive viewer scores and the National Foundation Holiday extending the weekend, it should add significantly to its total.

Further behind was the sequel Bridget Jones’ Baby with 208,000 viewers (USD 1.61 million) over the frame and 334,000 spectators (USD 2.45 million) in five days. This falls more or less in line with previous installments of the franchise.

Tom Hanks vehicle Sully opened with just 186,000 tickets sold (USD 1.5 million) over the weekend and 293,000 admissions (USD 2.27 million) since Wednesday, but as it has been well received it may have a little more life on the charts.

KIM Jee-woon’s The Age of Shadows closed out the top five with another 181,000 viewers (USD 1.35 million) bringing its haul to a stellar 7.29 million spectators (USD 54.13 million).

Though it fell 83%, Japanese zombie film I Am a Hero remained far and away the top draw on the diversity chart, drawing in another 18,000 viewers (USD 143,000), giving it a new total of 201,000 admissions (USD 1.55 million).
