LA LA LAND Bedazzles in 2nd Place

Business ticked up 25% as a pair of hot new releases recharged the box office, boosting admissions to 2.45 million, while the market share for local films also experienced a modest rise to 63%.

Confidently easing into first place PARK Jung-woo’s Deranged (2012) follow-up, the nuclear meltdown drama Pandora with 1.12 million tickets (USD 7.93 million) sold over the weekend and a total of 1.46 million entries (USD 10.06 million) recorded since its Wednesday bow. The third disaster flick of the year, following TRAIN TO BUSAN and Tunnel, Pandora is getting reasonably strong user scores but faces strong local competition for the rest of the month in a particularly busy end-of-year season.

Oscar hopeful La La Land kicked off its global rollout with a very strong debut in Korea, singing its way to a 427,000 viewer (USD 3.26 million) debut, and 563,000 spectators (USD 4.19 million) throughout its first five days. Audience reactions have been kind and reservations remain healthy so the Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling musical should continue to draw in the crowds as it competes with the local deluge in the coming weeks.

Dropping 56% to third place was local comedy MY ANNOYING BROTHER, which banked another 264,000 admissions (USD 1.84 million) to bring its total to 2.69 million tickets. (USD 17.82 million). After a strong run the film will quickly make way for new titles.

New Hollywood animation Storks had a low-key debut with just 147,000 spectators (USD 981,000) recorded during its debut and 167,000 viewers (USD 1.1 million) since Wednesday. A shade behind it with 146,000 tickets sold (USD 1.03 million) was Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them which has now reached 4.47 million admissions (USD 32.23 million).

Falling just outside the top five in its second frame was E.oni’s MISSING, down 72% for 133,000 new entries (USD 938,000) but which was just able to squeeze past the one million admissions mark and has now score 1.05 million viewers (USD 6.91 million).

Looking to unseat Pandora this coming weekend will be local fantasy romance Will You Be There? from director HONG Ji-young and starring KIM Yun-seok and BYUN Yo-han.
