THE MERCILESS Opens a Distant Second

Two films jostled for the top spot over the weekend but despite a neck-and-neck start, one of the openers appears to have succumbed to an online controversy. Hollywood titles made up 61% of sales, which reached 2.09 million tickets in the spring weekend.

A few months after becoming a major sleeper hit in the United States, Get Out opened in a commanding first place, scoring 803,000 entries (USD 6.09 million) in its first weekend and selling 1 million (USD 7.47 million) tickets since its Wednesday opening.

Opening far behind in second place was local crime thriller The Merciless with SUL Kyung-gu and IM Si-wan. The film debuted with 377,000 viewers (USD 2.87 million) and 590,000 spectators (USD 4.33 million) over five days. Despite opening in first place on Wednesday, a controversy surrounding remarks made by director BYUN Sung-hyun on Twitter appear to have affected the film’s box office returns. The Merciless will have its world premiere on May 24th as a midnight screening during the Cannes Film Festival.

Another new entry debuted in third but the big-budget tentpole King Arthur: Legend of the Sword crashed in its opening with just 210,000 admissions (USD 1.57 million) over the frame and 330,000 entries (USD 2.44 million) overall.

The Boss Baby slid 45% in its third weekend as it brought in another 194,000 spectators (USD 1.38 million) and has to date sold 2.21 million tickets (USD 15.30 million). Closing out the top five was the sophomore weekend of Alien: Covenant, which was 134,000 entires (USD 1.02 million) after a 75% dip. The sci-fi horror has accumulated 1.24 million admissions (USD 9.18 million).

Business should see a boost this coming weekend with the entry of the latest installment in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise which already has a commanding lead on the reservations chart.
