JESTERS: THE GAME CHANGERS Lands in Fourth Place

With temperatures starting to drop, local theaters also experienced a slowdown in sales but business remained brisk with 2.36 million tickets sold over the past weekend. It was particularly good news for local titles, who snatched up 70% of those sales.

Coming in at a surprise number one was the new occult horror Metamorphosis from director KIM Hong-sun with a rare leading role for BAE Sung-woo, co-starring here with SUNG Dong-il. The film debuted strongly with 572,000 viewers (USD 4.27 million) over the weekend and a total of 770,000 tickets (USD 5.65 million) were counted since its Wednesday bow.

During its second lap on the charts, Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw decelerated 56% as it filled another 494,000 seats (USD 3.74 million), raising its bounty to a solid 2.97 million (USD 21.87 million) sales.

In its fourth week EXIT remained a threat as it eased just 41% and scored 454,000 new entries (USD 3.28 million). This raised its total to a mighty 8.36 million admissions (USD 58.17 million).

Less rosy in its debut was the period drama Jesters: The Game Changers starring CHO Jin-woong and SON Hyun-ju. The film rallied 284,000 spectators (USD 2.04 million) over the course of its debut weekend and has secured 434,000 sales (USD 3.03 million) over five days.

The Battle: Roar to Victory lost two thirds of its audience in week three, as it added 265,000 viewers (USD 1.91 million). The Colonial Era war drama has amassed an impressive 4.51 million tickets (USD 31.72 million) to date.

Looking at this week’s upcoming releases, JUNG Ji-woo’s new romantic drama Tune in for Love with KIM Go-eun and JUNG Hae-in is looking to handily top the box office this coming weekend, perhaps on its way to replicating the last year’s late summer romantic drama hit On Your Wedding Day. Shark attack sequel 47 Meters Down: Uncaged will provide this week’s Hollywood competition. Meanwhile, KIM Bora’s multiple award-winning House of Hummingbird is poised for a solid debut in limited release.
